First one!
Jeff and I went out Sunday (21-Apr-96) real early and finally managed to shoot one of those things!!!!!!
Jeff called with one of those mouth blown predator calls. I was about 20 yds from him. After about 3 or 4 minutes, The (later determined to be Female) Coyote came trotting directly towards him. There was a very light wind she was travelling kinda diagonal with the wind. I had both the 20ga pump with #3 buck and the AR15 with 60 gr. Hornady soft points, so I lifted the AR, and tracked the 'yote in the sights until she cleared the last bush, I had a broadside shot that I later paced at 26 yards.
I shot, she turned and RAN, I shot 3 more times to make her run faster, then she disappeared. Jeff kept calling for about 5 more minutes while I wondered how in the world I could have missed. We got up and walke to the spot where she was and there was blood EVERYWHERE. We followed a blood trail on the dirt that looked like a garden hose had sprayed it! We even found a chuck of LUNG!. She had run 80 or 100 yds then dropped. The bullet went in, thru both lungs, nicked the heart and out, broke 1 rib on each side and left a 1.5" exit hole!
She looked smaller lying on her side (red side, the one with the exit hole, was up) than she did trotting in, but carrying her 100 yds back to the truck, she got heavy!
We skinned her as best we could. I froze the skin until I can get prepared to tan it. In the interest of being scientific and open minded, we took some meat, We cooked some ribs, there was not bad taste, but it was EXTREMELY tough basically inedible.
By the way, there are strange diseases various animals can get and you should use gloves when skinning and butchering, and for game animals that you really can eat, cook all meat thoroughly)
You really oughta try predator calling/hunting some time! its fun!
